The imagination is a thing all artists must open with care. You have to open the door just wide enough to allow a few monsters in. I firmly believe there has to be some darkness in there or the whole thing doesn't work. But too many demons can ruin the entire balance. They have to be restrained a bit. Put on a leash and given only so much room to roam.
For me, the main characters are always the guiding force of goodness that takes me through the bleak landscape, leaving a trail of color behind them as they walk. They are the mouthpiece spitting out demons on the pages.
It's time to inhale deeply and breathe fire into the world.
